About

About geolith

geolith is a geocoding and map tile service built on open data. It packs OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps into one static .glx file, answers each query with HTTP range reads, and runs on Cloudflare’s edge as geolith cloud. It is built by Vinayak Kulkarni, a developer who works on open-source mapping tools.

Why it exists

Open geocoders are good, but running one in production means a database or a search cluster, a long import, and a machine sized to keep it all in memory. Hosted geocoders are easy, but they bill per request, restrict what you can store, and keep the data closed.

geolith takes a different route: build the whole index once into a single file, then serve it from anywhere that can answer a range request. The result is a geocoder you can copy, roll back and host at the edge.

How we measure

Every number on this site comes from a measured run. In India we run geolith, Nominatim, Photon and Pelias in Docker on the same data with 200 queries per set; the method and the results are on the benchmarks page of the API docs. When we have not measured something, we say so or label it planned.
